River Plate eliminated from the Copa Libertadores
Millonario falls in penalty shootout
Internacional advances to quarterfinals
Internacional de Porto Alegre defeated River Plate 9-8 on penalties on Tuesday night in the second leg of their Copa Libertadores Round of 16 tie, advancing to the quarterfinals.
The match finished 2-1 in regulation time, with goals from Gabriel Mercado, Alan Patrick, and Robert Rojas. In the penalty shootout, Internacional goalkeeper Daniel was the hero, saving two penalties to send his team through.
River Plate had taken a 2-1 lead into the second leg following last week's first leg at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. However, Internacional came out firing in the second leg and took the lead through Mercado in the 70th minute.
Alan Patrick equalized for Internacional in the 78th minute with a stunning free-kick, before Rojas put the Brazilian side ahead in the 90th minute with a header.
River Plate could not find a way back into the game in extra time, and the match went to a penalty shootout.
Internacional converted all five of their penalties, while River Plate missed two of their nine.
The result is a major disappointment for River Plate, who were one of the favorites to win the Copa Libertadores this year.
Internacional will now face either Flamengo or Corinthians in the quarterfinals.
