Case against Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Bengaluru South, for violating election code

Case registered at CEN police station

Bengaluru, April 5, 2024:

A case has been registered against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya, for allegedly violating the election code of conduct. The case was registered at the Central Election Commission (CEN) police station on April 24, 2024.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Karnataka, a complaint was received against Surya for allegedly holding a public meeting without permission in the Jayanagar area of Bengaluru on April 23, 2024. The meeting was allegedly held in violation of the Model Code of Conduct, which prohibits political parties from holding public meetings or rallies without prior permission from the election authorities.

The CEO said that a probe has been initiated into the matter and that necessary action will be taken against Surya if found guilty. The BJP has not yet commented on the matter.

Surya is a prominent figure in the BJP and is considered to be close to the party's national leadership. He is a member of the party's national executive and is also the president of the BJP's youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

The case against Surya comes at a time when the BJP is facing allegations of violating the election code of conduct in several states. The party has been accused of using religious symbols and hate speech to polarize voters, and of distributing freebies to woo voters.
