The K-Index: A Measure of Geomagnetic Activity
What is the K-Index?
The K-index is a measure of geomagnetic activity for a 3-hour period. It is based on measurements of the Earth's magnetic field at a number of observatories around the world. The K-index is a logarithmic scale, with values ranging from 0 to 9. A K-index of 0 indicates very quiet geomagnetic conditions, while a K-index of 9 indicates extremely disturbed geomagnetic conditions.
How is the K-Index Used?
The K-index is used to track geomagnetic activity and to forecast the likelihood of geomagnetic storms. Geomagnetic storms can disrupt power grids, communications systems, and other infrastructure. The K-index can be used to help prepare for and mitigate the effects of geomagnetic storms.
