French Parliamentary Elections: A Test of Macron's Leadership

Hollande and Macron Cast Their Votes as Far-Right Party Makes Gains

France holds its second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday, with the outcome expected to shape President Emmanuel Macron's ability to govern.

Former French President François Hollande and incumbent President Emmanuel Macron cast their votes on Sunday as the country held its second round of parliamentary elections. The vote comes after a divisive campaign that saw the far-right National Rally (RN) party make significant gains in the first round of voting last week.

According to projections, the RN could win up to 89 seats in the National Assembly, a significant increase from the eight seats it currently holds. This would make the RN the largest opposition party in the Assembly and could complicate Macron's ability to pass legislation.

In the first round of voting, the centrist coalition led by Macron's La République en Marche party won the most votes, but fell short of an outright majority. The RN came in second place, with the left-wing NUPES coalition coming in third.

Macron will need to form alliances with other parties to pass legislation, and the rise of the RN could make it difficult for him to find common ground. The RN has pledged to roll back some of Macron's reforms, including tax cuts and changes to the labor market.

The outcome of the second round of voting is expected to have a significant impact on French politics and the future of Macron's presidency.
