Ex-Oregon State Coach Jonathan Smith Survives Upset Bid in First Michigan State Game

Smith's Spartans Win 35-13

East Lansing, MI -

In his first game as head coach of the Michigan State Spartans, former Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith led his team to a 35-13 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

The Spartans jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Quarterback Payton Thorne threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, and running back Jalen Berger rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown.

The Golden Hurricane were led by quarterback Davis Brin, who threw for 182 yards and a touchdown. However, Brin was also intercepted twice, and the Tulsa offense was held to just 304 total yards.

Smith's Success at Oregon State

Smith was the head coach at Oregon State from 2018 to 2021. In his four seasons with the Beavers, he led them to a 21-27 record, including a 7-6 mark in 2021.

Smith's success at Oregon State was due in part to his ability to develop young players. He also implemented a spread offense that was successful in moving the ball and scoring points.

The Future of Michigan State Football

With Smith at the helm, the future of Michigan State football looks bright. The Spartans have a talented roster, and Smith is a proven winner.

If Smith can continue to develop his players and implement his offensive system, the Spartans could be a contender in the Big Ten East Division.
