MLB Playoff Push: Mets Delay Phillies Cli
New York Mets Win, Delay Philadelphia Phillies' Clinching
After Tuesday night’s 8-3 win over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in Georgia, the New York Mets kept their faint playoff hopes alive, even if just slightly. The win pushed the Philadelphia Phillies’ chance to clinch a Wild Card playoff spot down the road, at least for now.
The Magic Number is Two
The win dropped the Mets' magic number to clinch a playoff berth to three. A little less than two weeks ago, the Mets were up 10.5 games in the standings. However, the team is just 9-19 since August 12th, allowing the Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers to jump ahead.
Phillies Still in Control
The Phillies still lead the race for the final Wild Card spot in the National League by 1.5 games over the Brewers. The two teams still have seven games to play, including four against each other head-to-head beginning this Friday.
Mets Season on Brink
The Mets still have a 1.5 game lead over the Padres for the second Wild Card, but have lost four of their last five games. After this series with the Braves, the Mets will face the Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, and Miami Marlins. The Mets are 38-25 against those teams in 2022.
Braves Still Competing
The Braves, meanwhile, keep their hopes of winning the National League East alive — at least for one more day. The Braves are now 10 games behind the first-place Mets with just 11 games remaining on their schedule.
